GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation, is the new legislation for the protection of personal data within the European Union. This regulation replaces the current directive on the protection of personal data.

This regulation applies to all companies or entities, regardless of their country of origin, collecting or processing data of European citizens.

Protection of individual's personal data is reinforced, and obligations when collecting or processing data are widened. The key points of this compliance are:
- An extended definition of personal data: Any data enabling individual identification will be considered as personal data, whether it concerns private, public or professional life.
- Enhanced individual rights regarding consent: Companies collecting or processing data have an obligation of transparency on the type of data stored and on the retention period.
- The obligation to put in place preventive data protection measures: It is now mandatory to implement all necessary technical and organizational measures to prevent any risk to confidentiality and data integrity.
- The obligation to inform about any data leak: In case of data leak, the company in charge has to notify the national protection authority in order for users to take all appropriate measures.
- The need to appoint a Data Protection Officer: It is now mandatory to appoint a legal manager in charge of the proper application of the regulations within the company.
